post Jack Johnson - Sleep through the static (single)

August 31st, 2008

Filed under: Reviews, Singles — chris @ 12:18 pm

The worst thing about Jack Johnson is the do gooding peace and love vibes of his music, no doubt brought on by lethargy due to smoking too much spliff and inhaling too much salty air while being a bum knocking around beaches and recording dull albums by solar power, the second worst thing are his fans.

For some people, Abba iare inexplicably one of the greatest pop bands of all time, each three-and-a-half minutes is a little nugget of sweet Pop of the highest order. Then there are those who think Abba is one of the most over-rated bands in history; their vomit inducing pop causing annoyance every time they are heard and the only good thing to come out of their existence is influencing of Steve Naives’ piano playing on Elvis Costello Classic ‘Oliver’s Army’.

Sun, sea, and sand…not the setting we’re used to in festival season but Summercase has them all and more to boot.

Slowly creeping into the conscience of the festival going public in its three year existence, the four stages of Summercase, based in Barcelona and Madrid on the same weekend is on the verge of becoming a major player in the festival season and with good reason.

post Primal Scream - Beautiful Future (B-Unique)

Being a Primal Scream fan is equal parts satisfying as it is damn frustrating. They have the ability to electrify with scorchers such as Swastika Eyes but have a habit of boring immensely; (all of 2006s ‘Riot City Blues’ album).

Throughout their career they have never managed to make two great albums in a row and their output from this decade has suggested a petering out of the reasons why we loved these guys so long.

Does anyone remember the mid-90’s hard techno track ‘Hackney Council are a bunch of c*nts’? Well, ten years on and Hackney Council continue to live up to their reputation.

When Lex Records announced a one off live gig featuring a number of artists from their roster and headlined by Neon Neon playing their first UK date (apart from festivals), they excitedly announced that it would be in a car park off Shoreditch High Street. With their ‘Stainless Style’ album being influenced by the life of John DeLorean, the car park idea was a great one, as was if you turned up in one, you’d get in free. Hackney Council in their infinite wisdom agreed to this…until the very last minute.

As you are fully aware, the original snivelling bedwetters, Coldplay, have returned to cast a dark shadow over musical integrity and taste, and oh boy are we lapping it up.

There are literally millions of people who don’t actually like music getting all excited about that one gig a year they go to, and seeing as Robbie has gone all weird and that with his electro, there’s only one band for you, yes, that’s right…Cold-fuckin-PLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLAY, wooo, alright.

1. Radiohead - Live at Victoria Park, 24th June, London

The first opportunity to hear ‘In Rainbows live on the big stage, they should of course be doing this but Shakin’ Stevens got the call instead, which is funny, right?

2. MGMT - ‘Electric Feel’ single

From one of the finest and definitely most out there albums of the Year, Brooklyn’s baby Flaming Lips pull one of the most accesable tracks from it as a single. There are many journalist cliches out there, the biggest being ‘difficult second album syndrome’ but right next to it is what you’ll hear every journalist with a lack of imagination will put when describing this track. ooooooh, it’s some white guys singing in falsetto - PRINCE. Of course, it never sounds like Prince, Prince only sounds like Prince, it’s just a white dude singing in a falsetto…move on.

1.Neon Neon - ‘Stainless Style’ album

2. The Hives - ‘Bigger hole to fill’ (From The Black & White album)

Hidden at the end of their latest album which is more miss than hit is this gem. one of their finest. Coming on like Duran Duran covering The Monkees ranting on about not having time to do things for people; “A man who fights for causes worthy of a fool, is a fool to fight for causes that’s the golden rule, I take it to the table know all know fix know how, but if I’m gonna do it I ain’t gonna do it now”. Most people would have been right to write them off but with a song as good as this there may be a glimmer of hope beyond their brilliant live shows.
