Morrissey: You have killed Me (Attack)

Ah the sweet smell of susses. It’s hard to believe that only three years ago Morrissey was completely written off in the eyes of the British media. Even the NME who now worship every column inches he grants them, were sticking in the knife with gleeful relish. The fact of the matter is Morrissey has never been so popular, and this the brand new single from his triumphant latest album, ‘Ringleader Of The Tormentors’, signifies a new and distinctly more relaxed Mozzer.

Recorded within the glamorous settings of Rome. It explores his new found acceptance of the ‘physical relationship’, baring the hilarious tongue in cheek lyric, ‘I entered nothing and nothing entered me, until you came with the key’. There’s something altogether astonishing about this recent turn of honesty within his lyrics. At one time he’d skirt around such issues, always eluding but never anything more, this is full on filth but delivered with great pathos.

The melody though simplistic, bares all the catchy hallmarks of a definite hit, not that he needs to pull anything spectacular out of the bag these days, he could fart down a microphone and people would buy it. A brilliant slice of intelligent pop, welcome back Moz, the charts as always are a better place for you.

Film School Robbed in Ridiculous Manner

Thefts of band vans and equipment happen all the time– just ask the Decemberists, Sonic Youth, Brian Jonestown Massacre, or, more recently, Matt Pond PA. But rarely are the circumstances surrounding the crime as fucked up as what happened to San Francisco dream-poppers Film School yesterday.

Early Wednesday morning, the band slept soundly at a Comfort Inn in Philadelphia following a show at local venue the Fire the night before. They had taken precautions in choosing where to stay, and had picked the Comfort Inn because it featured a locked, well-lit, fenced-in parking lot with a ’round-the-clock attendant.

Nonetheless, a crook managed to break into the lot, break into the vehicle, saw through the Club lock on the steering wheel…and drive the Film School van straight through the parking lot fence! Good lord, how much crack was this person on?!

According to the band’s label, Beggars Banquet, a witness (the attendant?) called the police while the theft was in progress, and the crime is being investigated.

If all that wasn’t enough to drive the band crazy, it should be noted that the van in question was no Minutemen hoopty. Film School bought the new ride two days before their current tour began, at considerable expense. Unfortunately, their vehicular insurance doesn’t cover theft, and the band members’ personal insurance will probably only be a slight help.

In the immediate aftermath, the band has had no choice but to cancel last night’s gig in Washington, D.C., as well as tonight’s show in Providence, Rhode Island. They hope to be able to borrow and rent equipment for the dates beyond that, including SXSW, but those shows remain tentatively scheduled for now. A benefit concert will mostly likely take place once the band returns to San Francisco at the end of the month.

The remaining dates, all tentative:

03-10 Wellesley, MA - Wellesley College

03-11 New York, NY - Mercury Lounge

03-12 New York, NY - Mercury Lounge

03-14 Memphis, TN - Hi Tone

03-16 Austin, TX - Club de Ville

03-31 San Francisco, CA - Slim’s

04-01 Los Angeles, CA - Troubadour

Yes, it is true, we are bringing the website to musical life this Saturday spinning the kind of tunes you read about on the site, classic acts such as The Smiths and Radiohead come together with new breed artists such as Clor and Battle. With a truckload of alternative and indie classics mixed together with electroclash, britpop and punk, why would you want to be anywhere else?

post Idiotpilot - Strange we should meet here (Reprise)

March 6th, 2006

Arriving on the coat tails of new metal 5 years too late and weirdly fused with Radiohead style crooning comes Idiotpilot with this album of mid 30-year-old sounding teenage angst by real teeagers (they’re 18) and probably big jeans, crap tattoos and make up.

Although slightly more inventive than your Linkin Parks and Limp Bizkits with their occasional foray into electronica, each track is ruined by the same dull whiney bollocks the nu metal scene died from.

Tracks worthy of note is the intro ‘Losing colour’ which easily passes itself off as ‘Kid A’ era Radiohead and ‘Les Lumieres’ which is an excellent deep house track which could have been released on Darren Emersons Underwater label.

The rest is a confusing mix of weird abstract Aphex style techno mixed with rock, ambient noodlings, Public Enemy beats and wailing pits of self-pity and self discovery gothic rock shit that only people who live in trailer parks would actually find any real enjoyment in.

Whoever signed them probably think they’re the new Soulwax…they are not. Chris Todd

post GOLDFRAPP at BRIXTON ACADEMY 12/02/2006

The anticipation in this legendary venue for Goldfrapp is in over-drive long before she arrives on the stage, this could put off a band as fragile as support act The Shortwave Set, instead they rise to it with excellent results. They perform a heady mix of acoustic loveliness, which clashes with abstract samples and live dj mixing over the tracks. They create a lush cross between Portishead, Nick Drake and My Bloody Valentine; this may be why the crowd seem in the majority confused, especially when the dj slows down the beats. Total originality breeds confusion so repect to The Shortwave set for that.

Dressed in a simple black mini skirt and heels, Allison Goldfrapp (and band except co-writer Will Gregory who ‘doesn’t do live’) fills the stage with her presence and attitude. Opening with otherworldly renditions of ‘Utopia’ and ‘Lovely head’, it’s impossible to take your eyes off her and she has the entire venue captivated.

She thrashes around the stage to a deliciously sultry ‘Fly me away’, performs a thrilling rendition of ‘Supernature’ highlight Satin Chic and puts her voice through special fx on ‘Train’ which make her sound like she is a machine. Throughout the set she exhudes a sexual energy which is as near to watching a sex show without actually seeing flesh.

And its not just the attitude or the stunning voice that makes this such a good show, the regular appearance of the 4 rubber suited female dancers writhing around the stage either as robots or as with silver horse heads to, yes, ‘Ride a white horse’ only add to the performance which is a genuine pop show but from the dark side.

Will Gregory is now a proven pop genius whose music is equally as effective live as it is on disc, the music pulsates, the beats are as banging as the bass is throbbing, so much so that you can feel it rumbling through your stomach and reverberating around the walls, a frazzling ‘Satin Chic’ and a victorious ‘Ooh La La’ hold testament to that.

Tonight she consolidated her position as a brilliant pop diva, she shimmers across the stage full of attitude and danger in her performance, the sort of danger that has you feeling she could have one of your eyes out either with her stilettos or another one of the high notes she reaches so damn effortlessly. Easily one of the best performers in the world right now, it can’t get better than this, astounding. Chris Todd.
