GOLDFRAPP at BRIXTON ACADEMY 12/02/2006
March 6th, 2006
The anticipation in this legendary venue for Goldfrapp is in over-drive long before she arrives on the stage, this could put off a band as fragile as support act The Shortwave Set, instead they rise to it with excellent results. They perform a heady mix of acoustic loveliness, which clashes with abstract samples and live dj mixing over the tracks. They create a lush cross between Portishead, Nick Drake and My Bloody Valentine; this may be why the crowd seem in the majority confused, especially when the dj slows down the beats. Total originality breeds confusion so repect to The Shortwave set for that. Dressed in a simple black mini skirt and heels, Allison Goldfrapp (and band except co-writer Will Gregory who ‘doesn’t do live’) fills the stage with her presence and attitude. Opening with otherworldly renditions of ‘Utopia’ and ‘Lovely head’, it’s impossible to take your eyes off her and she has the entire venue captivated. She thrashes around the stage to a deliciously sultry ‘Fly me away’, performs a thrilling rendition of ‘Supernature’ highlight Satin Chic and puts her voice through special fx on ‘Train’ which make her sound like she is a machine. Throughout the set she exhudes a sexual energy which is as near to watching a sex show without actually seeing flesh. And its not just the attitude or the stunning voice that makes this such a good show, the regular appearance of the 4 rubber suited female dancers writhing around the stage either as robots or as with silver horse heads to, yes, ‘Ride a white horse’ only add to the performance which is a genuine pop show but from the dark side. Will Gregory is now a proven pop genius whose music is equally as effective live as it is on disc, the music pulsates, the beats are as banging as the bass is throbbing, so much so that you can feel it rumbling through your stomach and reverberating around the walls, a frazzling ‘Satin Chic’ and a victorious ‘Ooh La La’ hold testament to that. Tonight she consolidated her position as a brilliant pop diva, she shimmers across the stage full of attitude and danger in her performance, the sort of danger that has you feeling she could have one of your eyes out either with her stilettos or another one of the high notes she reaches so damn effortlessly. Easily one of the best performers in the world right now, it can’t get better than this, astounding. Chris Todd. 10/10
